Survival Tips When Money Is Tight

Like many others out there, I have gone through some pretty rough patches in life where money gets tight. At times, fearful of not being able to afford to put food on the table, gas in the car, or pay my bills. Majority of Canadians do not have a "savings" that they can dip into if the need shall ever come.

Here are some ways that I have learned to stretch a buck, cut costs, and make ends meet when money is tight.

Consign or Garage Sale. You may be surprised with what you can gather. One person's trash, is another ones treasure. You may earn your self an extra $100!

Return  your bottles. We return our bottles once a month and roughly get $20-$30 back for our juice & beverage containers. This amounts to approx 3 regular garbage bins of recycling. Get your kids in on the deal to collect from neighbors. This is a great way to get them involved and earn their own spending money.

Use your change: Rummage through your house in your couches, coat pockets, coin jars & car consoles. Collect your change and use it! I bet you can find an extra $20! Try it, and let me know how much you can collect!

Dilute: I have learned to stretch a buck in so many ways, and this is one of my best ones yet. I dilute my cleaners by half. This includes dish liquid, trigger cleaners, and even body wash.  I save my empty bottles, fill half way with water, then the rest with product. Most times, I never know the difference.

Thrift Shopping. I was always embarrassed to walk into a thrift shop..I always thought they were for "poor" people. I felt too proud. When a friend invited me to go with her a few years back, I was shocked. A lot of things are in great used condition, if not still brand new with tags! Now I go every week looking for kids clothing especially. They grow so fast they don't have time to wear the clothing out. Instead of going to Old Navy to buy an average $10 t-shirt or pants for my daughter, I can now get 2 shopping bags FULL for $10. You will find great deals on home decor, clothing, sporting goods & more!

Walk, don't drive...: Gas is expensive!!! Carpooling or using the bus is your next best option.

Make your Work Lunch: By bringing your own food & beverages to work instead of grabbing a $5 soup or sandwich at a coffee shop, you can cut your costs by more than half.

Couponing: Cut your grocery bills in half. Make a conscious effort to collect and USE your coupons for everyday grocery shopping. Best sales to combine coupons on are BOGO, 50% Off, Dollar Days, and clearance items.

Phone Bills: Take a hard look at your finances and figure out what exactly you are spending money on and if those items are necessities. Cut out extra features on your phones such as call forwarding, caller ID. If you have a home phone & cell phones, ask your self if you really need both and discontinue one if you can.

Cable & Satellite TV: Go down to basic service and cut out the extra packages.

Laundry: Wash on cold, and hang your clothes to dry. You are paying money to run and operate these machines. Cut your energy spending in half.

Credit Cards: Phone your credit card companies to see if you can either reduce your payments for a period of time, or reduce your interest rates. There are many credit cards out there that will give you perks such as air miles rewards & grocery rewards. Sobeys offers a credit card where you earn CASH toward future grocery purchases. However, it has a high interest. If you are able to use this credit card and pay it off every month in full it could be of great benefit. In one year I had earned an extra $1000 towards my groceries.

Rewards Cards: Many stores offer some sort of rewards card where you can redeem points to get a cheaper price on products. Some popular stores are: Shoppers Drug Mart, Save On Foods, Safeway, Sobeys. Start redeeming your points to save.

Stop Buying Drive Through Coffee: On my way to work, driving the kids to school, or running errands, my greatest weakness is purchasing a coffee on the go. This is at least 5 days a week. At $2.05 each for my Large Double Double I roughly spend $40+ a month. This money could be used instead to purchase much needed groceries.

Have a "Must Go" Dinner Once A Week: Stop throwing out your left overs. Every Friday I go through my fridge and freezer, gather all the left overs, and items that I do not have enough to make a full meal and make a buffet. A little bit of everything. Saves money, and makes for an easy end of week dinner.

Use your local Food Bank: If you have never used one before, this may seem like the absolute last option that you would consider. Food banks are there for community members to help feed families when times are hard. Never be too proud to ask for help. Food banks are there for a reason. To Help.

Make Gifts: Instead of purchasing a $20 bottle of wine, or a $20 toy for your child to bring to a birthday party, get creative and make something. Homemade gifts are always more appreciated and meaningful to those who receive them. I find great ideas on www.pinterest.com.

Have a "Toonie" Children's Birthday Party: Love this idea. Each child invited is asked to bring a Toonie as a gift instead of a manufactured present. At the end of the day, the birthday child gets to go out shopping to pick one gift that he/she really wants instead of receiving many things that cost a lot of money, that they really didn't want in the first place.

Would love to hear from my readers more tips on how to save money and how to get through hard financial times. Comment and let me know of your best tips!

Spring Cleaning

After a long winter, I love gutting out the house of all the clutter that has been collecting. Here are a few of my own tips to help you purge all your clutter & spring clean.

One Year Rule: Go through your closets & cupboards everywhere throughout your home. If you haven't used it in the last 12 months, chances are you really don't need it. Let it go! Add these items to your garage sale pile, donate to your local thrift shop, or simply throw it out.

Closets & Cupboards: Completely empty them and start fresh. Only put those items back that are in good condition, neatly stacked & organized.

Clothing: go through all winter clothing. Children`s clothing especially since they out grow almost everything each season. Save only clothing that is in great condition to be handed down to younger siblings. Label clothing bins that you are saving on the outside so you know exactly what type (summer/winter) & size each bin holds to avoid having to sift through bins.

Toys: Go through your children's toys and purge anything and everything that they do not use or have interest in anymore. This is always best done when they are not around. Out of sight, out of mind. Chances are they will never notice what you have gotten rid of.

Sporting Goods: Most people hang on to bikes, skis, boots, bindings, backpacks, helmets, skates simply because they cost a fortune to replace. If you use these items every year, they will get worn and outdated and especially children will out grow them. My suggestion is to give these items to your local consignment shop. They will likely be able to sell these items quickly for you, and you will get money back. Typically, you can ask for cash in hand once the item sells, or get an in store credit. In Store credits are sometimes better as you will earn a better percentage in return. Consignment stores not only have second hand items, but also supply new brand name goods.

Food: Go through your pantry and throw out any stale open bags or boxes of food. Create a "snack" bin that will fit in your pantry to put granola bars, fruit leather, Mini boxes of raisins etc. This will save space instead of having 3-5 open boxes of snacks stashed around on your shelves. Completely empty your freezer, and throw out any freezer burnt/forgotten about food items. If you have a large freezer, a great idea is to store your food in milk crates. They stack very nicely inside. This way instead of "digging" to the bottom to find something you simply lift out a crate.

Curtains & Blinds: Spend a day and take them all down. Either launder curtains yourself or send them off to the dry cleaners. Dust and wash your blinds. Since all your blinds and curtains are down, now is the best time to clean your windows.

Out Door Storage: Whether you have a shed, or a carport, gut and sweep them out. Throw out any broken items, organize your tools, hang up those rakes & shovels .

Not all of this will ever get done in one day...spring cleaning can be a daunting task. Go easy and pick one or two tasks a weekend and you will have it done in no time. You will be ready to relax for the rest of the summer.

Last Minute School Cupcakes

This one is for all you busy, on the go moms out there.

My kids constantly are forgetting to give me their school newsletters & notes from their teachers. And I, being the busy mom that I am, don't always read my e-mails.

While at hockey practice on a Tuesday night with my two girls ages 4 & 7, I get a text from a fellow mom who's child is in the same class as my 4 year old mentioning that they had just finished making a birthday card for Ella for her birthday party at school....Really? Since my daughters birthday is at the end of March, I logically assumed that the preschool class would be celebrating on the last Friday before March Break...But no, I was wrong. They would be celebrating St.Patrick's Day on the last Friday before March Break, and Ella's birthday celebration would be the following morning!

Now I am in a pinch, and really don't feel like rushing off to the grocery store to get baking supplies. When I got home from hockey, the kids got all showered up, and I promptly put them to bed.
Trying to figure out what in the world I was going to make for her class I blankly stared into my pantry and the shelves of my stockpile. I had the ingredients to make Rice Krispy treats...but that's not really saying "Birthday" to me...I found my last few packages of Dr.Oetker Brownie mix & Dr.Oetker Icing that I purchased for $1.00 each on sale a few months ago.

It was 8:30pm...I figured, 5 minutes to get it together, 20 minutes to bake, 10 minutes to cool, and 5 minutes to decorate. In 40 minutes...this is what I came up with, and they were a hit!

Here is everything that I used:
  • 1 package of Dr.Oetker Brownie Mix (makes 11 small cupcakes)
  • 1 package of Dr.Oetker Chocolate Icing Mix
  • 1 package of Dr.Oetker White Icing Mix
  • Red sprinkles
  • 1/2 pint washed strawberries cut in half
I managed to make 11 small cupcakes with the brownie mix. The class only has 8 students, so this was just the right amount. I combined the chocolate & white icing together to make a "light" colored chocolate icing. I only had one of each package, and wanted them to be all the same. Combining them was perfect. I piped the icing with a regular piping bag with no tip attached (if you don't have a piping bag, you can use any plastic bag with a small piece of the corner cut off) swirling around the cupcake from the outside in. Shake a bit of red sprinkles left over from my Christmas cookies, and Voila! Done!

To decorate & get it all prettied up for school, I wrapped a pizza pan in tin foil, and used of the last of my strawberries that I had, which I sliced in half and scattered around the tray in between the cupcakes.

So, its always a great idea to stock up on those items that you see on "Dollar Days" that you know that you may use some day...Keep an eye out for those sales, and don't just pass them by. It may just be one of those items that will be your saving grace when you find out you need a "treat" for your child class the following morning.

Too much of a good thing?

I LOVE getting a deal just as much as anyone else, but there are limits as to how far I will go to get them.

You know those free candies & pens that you get at professional offices when you visit? Do you take ONE? ... or as many as you think you can get away with without anyone saying anything to you? Couponing Queens across Canada & abroad have become very inventive with how they are achieving such "great deals". Are they legit? Some are.... Are they ethical? Most are not.

Couponing with sense & sensibility is a rarity lately. Those who are using coupons to save money, stay out of the red, or to simply be able to afford to feed their families are suffering because of couponers who have no hesitation or compassion for others that are clearing shelves, & using coupons improperly.

Improper Use of Coupons:
  • photocopying coupons
  • using specific product coupons on the wrong size/type of product
  • Stacking unstackable coupons
  • Using expired coupons
Typically most stores will have limits now as to how many of the same "like" items you are permitted to purchase per shopping trip. Blatant disregard for these permissions, and purchasing more (way way more) product than allowed is pushing stores to adjust their policies to reflect even more restrictions. Yes, retailers want nothing more than to sell their product, but they also must maintain good customer service with ALL customers. Meaning, that they cannot "allow" couponers to clear shelves, leaving nothing left for 100's of loyal patrons to purchase. This is especially if an item is advertised. I am sure that all of us at one point or another have gone to a store to purchase something specific, to find that it is all gone. It is disappointing, especially if you are really needing that product. Resulting in you going to another store to spend your money...and who knows. If this situation happens enough times at one location, wouldn't you stop being a loyal customer? Probably...

Couponers who are only caring for themselves, and not the longevity, availability or ease of using coupons, are ruining it for everyone else.

Ohh..and here is another one....Tear Pad Stealing & Auctioning. This one really gets my goat.

There are some who will know exactly which day stores will release new coupons on their shelves...unless you have your running shoes & boxing gloves on, good luck in getting any. These tear pads have disappeared within hours (if not less time) from the shelves, thus now making them "rare". These pads can contain up to 600 coupons. Where as last year and years prior, one would be able to find tear pads weeks, & months after they were released. Sheer greed is the cause of this. It is so terrible to see that a simple piece of advertisement can cause such an upheaval amongst those who are trying to save a buck.

Now, to top all of this off...some have gone to the extent of "selling" these now rare coupons on e-bay! Some have paid virtually the same amount in actual cash that the coupons are worth...

COUPONS ARE FREE!

So, if you want to see coupons on your shelves, and retailers accept them with open arms, please have good ethics when using and acquiring coupons.

  • When you spot at tear pad in store, take only a little bit each time you shop. Five or so coupons at a time is a very reasonable amount for anyone
  • NEVER clear a shelf. Leave some for the next customer. However, if there is only a few on the shelf to begin with and you need it, by all means take it. Just use common sense.
  • Use the proper coupons for the items that you are buying. If there are size/type restrictions, you must comply with the restrictions set out on the coupon. The more that people try to cheat, the more restrictions that we will all begin to see printed. Manufacturers DO know how people are using these coupons, don't think we are fooling them.

Small Town Couponing - It can be done

Couponing has become hard even for some of the most experienced & knowledgeable couponers out there.

The sheer interest in saving money, and tonnes of it, is very appealing....to anyone!

Couponers are no longer the struggling mothers, or unemployed individuals seeking just to stay a float. Couponers are business men & women, the single - working average jo, parents of one or multiple children, the retired...and now even teenagers. Its everyone of all walks of life.

People in large cities can have quite the advantage when it comes to finding deals & accumulating large varieties of coupons. Small cities & towns...ummmm not so much. But! it can still be done.

Big City Couponing Pro's & Con's:
  • Large variety of stores to comparison shop (Price Match) - PRO!
  • Multiple locations to search for tear pads - PRO!
  • Large cities have large amounts of people couponing, tear pads disappear quickly! - CON!
  • Takes more time to shop when you have to drive long distances to get a deal - CON!
  • Bigger stores = More stock - PRO!
  • Coupon inserts are widely distributed, if you can't find it at one location, you can always try another - PRO!
Small Town Couponing Pro's & Con's:
  •  Its hard to find the products that you have coupons for - CON
  • Small towns are filled with independent grocers who do not accept coupons. - CON
  • Limited amount of tear pads are put on shelves (if any) - CON
  • Takes minutes to get to the store to grab your favorite deals - PRO
.....as you can see, there are not too many Pro's to living in a small town & trying to coupon.

So, having been living in a small town all of my adult life, here is how I cope & accomplish getting great deals.

1. I have established a network of people from different areas in Canada in which I barter with to trade coupons. If I have no coupons to trade, other compensations are offered. Ie: cost of postage, help with couponing, or other tokens of appreciation. Between a small group of ladies on facebook (whom now we are best of friends without ever having met) and a wonderful lady in Northern Alberta, I can generally get my hands on any coupon that I need with out too much pain involved.

2. Hold out for deals & pricematch. In my small town we have two grocery stores. I will price match one store against the other, and I am able to "stack" coupons to accomplish getting the cheapest price possible.

3. Stockpiling.....for small towns, I feel that "some" stockpiling is necessary. The expensive everyday items that you will always use and are hard to find cheap is what I like to stockpile on. Toilet Paper on sale + Coupons I can find for between $3-$4, Coffee $0.99 (Reg. $10.99), Shampoos, Conditioners, body wash, deodorants, cleaners, toothpaste, medications, etc, etc....usually can get a deal so I pay less than 10% of the regular retail price. If I stock up on certain "expensive" items, I will end up saving a lot of money.
But you have to remember: "Savings are not Savings until they are consumed or used, otherwise it is just $$$$ sitting on a shelf."
*make sure the items you stockpile will actually get used before they expire, otherwise whats the point?

4. I stay organized. This is a huge asset to successful couponing no matter where you live. If you can't find a coupon, how in the world are you gonna use it....enough said. The way you organize and take care of your coupons should be just as important as paying your bills on time...cause its money in the bank.

5. I shop every other day. even if I don't need anything, I will walk through the grocery store and observe any deals that I may be able to take advantage of. Looking at the flyers that come to you in the mail are not the only deals that are going on. Look for the Clearance & Manager Specials for more great deals. This also gives me the chance to have a much needed coffee.

Which brings me to my last point:

6. NEVER shop with children!...I have learned my lesson one too many times about this one. Children are distracting, and require your full attention...at all times! I have misplaced, lost, and forgotten about certain coupons when shopping with my kids in tow. I also don't get everything that I need, resulting in loosing out on a sale. When ever possible, shop with out the kids!
Here are some examples just to re-enforce this point
  • When children who insist on walking and not sitting in the cart decide to open Fresh Orange Juice containers cause they are thirsty - She obviously needed my attention
  • You spend time putting items back on the shelf that you kids are deciding you need
  • Tantrums - resulting from putting back those items that you sweet children really really want
  • They RUN! all around the store, and you spend your time desperately trying to keep them calm & quiet
  • Your kids are impatient and demanding to leave...couponing takes too long with children
  • At the till...well, as my children love to pick out their favorite gum, toss magazines, and argue cause they are so DONE with being in the store, I am lucky to pull out the correct debit/credit card & coupons. By this time, I also just want to get out of there.
Couponing in a small town is very possible, but certainly not as easy to get the deals that you hear about in the big cities. Be determined, frugal, and stay on your game. You will get great deals.
